Photos of Lantflex Observers Manual for the Lantflex 55 operation the Currituck was scheduled to have an important role in. Admiral Woolridge to be in charge. I had photos in manual of Admiral and Staff and one I took of Currituck. The history of the Currituck does not mention this operation.

Facts and Figures About Lantflex

Some 212 Atlantic Fleet ships, of 42 different classifications ranging from aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers and amphibious assault shipping down through patrol craft and minesweepers will participate in the Exercise.... Manning the ships will be 50,000 Naval personnel, while approximately 26,000 Marines will form the Landing Force...

Several Atlantic Fleet commands, although not designated Exercise Commanders, ers, play a vital role in LantFlex. The Destroyer Force, for example, will commit most of its ships to Hunter-Killer Groups, and Mine Force will deploy its ships and craft both to lay and sweep mines in harbors and assault beach areas...

Submarines will act as the prime villains throughout LantFlex. With Commander, Submarines, Atlantic, serving Vice Admiral McMahon's Orange Forces, the subs will oppose sorties from harbors, attack convoys and attempt to disrupt amphibious landings...

Air power will also play a vital role in LantFlex. Navy units participating will be an attack carrier air group, land based and seaplane patrol squadrons, composite squadrons, two blimp squadrons, an airborne early warning squadron, and three carrier based anti-submarine warfare squadrons. The Marines will have the Second Marine Aircraft Wing, plus an attack squadron and a helicopter transport ¦squadron...

In addition to the standard landing craft, helicopters and sea planes will be used to land the troops and supplies that will establish a beachhead through which large scale land operations may be Initiated by Army forces...

A 90-ship task force, moving in two groups of landing ship fire support types, will be screened by cruisers and destroyer types. Air cover for the task force will be. supplied by a fast carrier striking force, and anti-submarine protection from two hunter-killer groups...

A 37-ship advance group consisting of cruisers, destroyers, minesweepers and high-speed transports will precede the amphibious Task Force into the objective area to reconnoiter and conduct diversionary operations... Most ships engaged in Phases I through IV departed their home ports about October 20. ..The amphibious shipping for Phibex left Norfolk between the 8th and 10th of November...

Among the many new concepts of amphibious warfare being tested during Phibex is a seaplane lift of troops to an inland body of water. Although experimentation is on a small scale, the results will be carefully observed...
