USS Hamlin - 1 March 1945 - Lifting PB2Y. Odd Fact: The USS HAMLIN (AV-15), a Kenneth Whiting class seaplane tender was commissioned the

Photo of USS ALBERMARLE (AV-5), above 2nd from right, a CURTISS (AV-4) class seaplane tender, in 1959. A ramp
for the P6M in her stern. She had tanks in her stern that could be flooded, lowering her stern.
The P6M could then be pulled up the ramp onto the seaplane deck. Then the seaplane program was canceled
she was transfered to the ARMY as a helo repair ship and spent time in Cam Ranh Bay. Later scrapped.
Photo of USS ASHLAND as (LSD-1), above right. Had the seaplane program continued
she was to be re-classified at
(AV-21).
Two other LSD's (Names not selected) were to be (AV-22) and (AV-23).
The LSD's could
flood the stern, pull in the P5M and then pump the boat deck [seaplane bay]dry.
