| Hi all you "Tuckers". Yep that guy that posted his message on Saturday is my Brother BOB. He is why I became a Currituck Crew member for over six years. I reported to the USS Valley Forge(CVS-45) straight out of SM"A" school in Jan 1959. After about a year and four months of chasing Subs around the VACAPES and up north, a 3 month Middie Cruise to the med and some Carribean port visits, I Asked for, and was granted Brother Duty with Bob aboard The Currituck in The Philadelphia Naval shipyard at the time, just after Her recommissioning. In my spare time,I helped Bob set up the photo Lab and was in on the ground floor so to speak, as to fitting out and Fancifying the Signal Bridge. For instance- There were over 300 turksheads tied on various stanchions and verticals including the ladder going up the mast, need I mention all the Half-Hitching we did? A couple of Cartons of Cigarettes in Yokosuka, Got our Downhaul Tail rings, Belaying pins and the 16 power telescope and many other objects Chromed. Not to mention all the Canvas that was Sewn, Mohagany stained and Spar varnished on the Stanchions etc.....ARRGH! Them were the Days lads. The ’Tuck was the best duty I ever had during my 20,1/2 year career. I made WO Bosun and served as Ship’s Boatswain on the USS Hancock (CV-19) on the West Coast, and then The 1st LT on the USS Shenandoah(AD-26) in Norfolk. Then I Reverted to SMCM and spent my last year on the USS Nimitz and retired In Virginia Beach, VA. in Jan 1979. This is just a short sketch....I got plenty more where that came from LOL. I’m Hoping to make the 2005 reunion with my Bro since he lives in Ottowa,IL. Better do this one I guess I’m no spring chicken.
