Dad (Luciano Leone) was on the Currituck. I couldn't believe how much information and pictures were on the site. I am still not finished going through it. I believe dad served on the Currituck somewhere between 1950-1957. He passed away on March 24th of this year and is buried at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery (he always said he would be proud to go there). We went through many photos while planning dad's funeral service and the pictures of him in the navy brought back memories of when he talked about the navy which he loved so much. He wanted to attend the reunion but ended up being too ill and could not make it. He also spoke of a man with the last name Zangara?? I'm not sure of the spelling but the two of them became good friends in the navy. On the website, there is a picture of the Currituck (in San Juan) 1954. My father often talked about San Juan (he also spent some time there while in the navy). The picture was taken by Bill Koonts AT2 VP56 1953-1956. I am in search of dad's history with the navy. If you would guide me toward any information about my dad and Mr. Zangara (or where to get information) I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for any help that you can provide. My Dad passed away in January of this year, 2006 of a heart attack. I miss him immensely and would be interested in hearing from anyone that might have been with him during this time. He talked about his Navy days and I do believe those days meant a great deal to him - probably more than he ever let us know. I have all of his pictures and two of his books. I remember the trip up the MeKong delta for the gun shoot, the air ops division manned the aft starboard gun mount, and if I remember correctly the young sailor was injured on the first trip up the river. The crew was a bunch of great guys. I transferred to the USS Wasp CVA-18, in June of 1953 and made a world cruise aboard with two stints in Korea. I made Commissaryman 2nd Class on 1-1-55, and was Honorably discharged 7-12-55. I then became a Nassau County, New York Police Officer and was a Detective in the Robbery Squad for thirteen years before I retired in March of 1978 after 22 years of service. I never was a crew on the Currituck, but I witnessed on Nov. 11, 1956 in the Island of Fayal in the Azores a seaplane crash on take off just outside the harbor. I was only 16 yrs. old at the time. In 1957 I moved to the United States. The plane was aMarlin twin engine seaplane (Martin?), with the T tail. This aircraft was part of a group of Seaplanes that met the USS Currituck in the Azores.
